SIMM exists because music-making can matter profoundly in people’s lives — but we need to understand better how, when and why it matters.
Around the world, musicians, researchers, educators, social workers and community organisations are working with music in contexts marked by exclusion, migration, trauma, poverty, conflict or social isolation. Their work generates important knowledge, but too often this knowledge remains local, fragile or invisible.
SIMM brings these people together. It creates international spaces where practice and research can meet, where experience can be shared, where difficult questions can be asked, and where the social role of music-making can be understood with both enthusiasm and critical care.
After more than ten years of activity, SIMM has become a recognised international platform. But its future remains financially fragile. Donations will help us sustain our symposia, research seminars, publications, podcasts, communication and access for people who cannot rely on institutional funding.
